GTA 6 has no plans for a post-launch physical release, “not at launch, and not months later”, insists new report

A new report has cast doubt on hopes that a physical version of Grand Theft Auto 6 will follow the digital release later this year.

Earlier this week, the same insider who in February claimed that GTA 6 wouldn’t launch with a physical version said that a proper physical edition with a disc will launch in December.

However, according to The Hollywood Reporter and “a source with knowledge of the [release] plans”, this isn’t true.

Despite “confirm[ing] the authenticity of the email as coming from Rockstar”, THR claims “the language is being misinterpreted by a hopeful internet”, insisting there are still no plans for physical release – “not at launch, and not months later”.

“On Thursday, an email accidentally provided (more) false hope for a GTA 6 disc,” THR added. “The email, a response to a ticket filed to Rockstar Support asking for a disc-based version of Grand Theft Auto VI, stated, ‘You will be able to acquire a physical copy during the following months’.” This, the outlet insists, “is being misinterpreted” as evidence of a physical release.

We’ve reached out to Take-Two for clarification.

It’s been a busy week for GTA 6-related news. Pre-orders went live in the week and we finally got a price, too. But there was outrage around rumours there will be no disc in the physical edition, only a download code, a decision many think hints at wider plans to crush second-hand sales and prompting a debate about game ownership. We also got a batch of new screenshots detailing exclusive Ultimate Edition shops, missions, cars, and outfits in the game.

We’ve also just learned that GTA 6 apparently features a new in-game social network where we’ll be able to watch videos and follow influencers to discover “secret” side missions.

GTA 6 releases on November 19th for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X.
