Grimguard Tactics review – “A deliciously dark turn-based RPG”

  • Engaging turn-based combat
  • Familiar hero summons system
  • A beautiful and grim fantasy world

Grimguard Tactics is a new turn-based RPG in which you must battle the ancient and powerful creatures known as the Primorva. You’ll recruit and upgrade a plethora of powerful heroes to combat these powerful foes in engaging turn-based battles.

Grimguard Tactics Pits You Against Ancient Evils

Grimguard Tactics offers a fun if somewhat traditional storyline about an ancient evil breaking free of its prison. The Primorva were the original inhabitants of the world of Terenos and embodied basic feelings, including hunger and lust.

Once locked away by a team of legendary heroes called Dawnseekers, the Primorva escaped the Umbral plane and, to the people’s dismay, evolved to become even more terrifying. Worse still, these creatures are capable of corrupting the free folk of Terenos. Relying on a colour scheme of deep hues, the game world embodies a macabre vibe despite the array of colours.

Combat in Grimguard Tactics

Each battle takes place on a grid. Some battles only let you send up to three heroes. However, most allow you to deploy up to five. Every hero in your party gets a turn each round, and it’s up to you whether they use a buff or their basic or special attack. To use a basic attack, tap once on an enemy to choose them as your target, then a second time to confirm the action.

Each hero has a special attack that is shown in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. For instance, Merc’s shockwave ability lets him attack the enemies behind your target simultaneously, with a mighty swing of his blade. As you may expect, these abilities take some time to recharge, so using them strategically is key to winning tough battles.

Besides attacking enemies, you can also interact with obstacles to remove them from your path, break exploding barrels to damage nearby foes, and collect green orbs that heal your party. The grid layout also changes from battle to battle, keeping combat fresh and intriguing.

Recruiting Heroes in Grimguard Tactics

There’s a typical recruitment mechanic for unlocking new heroes. To recruit a new hero, you’ll need a contract. Recruits come in four tiers: Militia, Veteran Militia, Heroes, and Legendary Heroes. Each recruit is aligned either to Chaos, Order, or Might. Chaos-aligned warriors are strong against Might-aligned heroes, Might is strong against Order, and Order is more potent against Chaos. Be sure to use alignments strategically in battle to deal devastating damage.

Dungeon and Arena Battles

Beyond the main story, you can also head over to the Dungeon to participate in tiered battles. See how many rounds you can last before your team falls. Dungeon battles give you the opportunity to earn tons of rewards, and unlike typical battles, you won’t need energy to participate in them.

Once you progress far enough through Act 2, you’ll gain access to the Arena. In the Arena, you can test your meddle by pitting five of your heroes against another player’s team. Winning said battles will increase your ranking, while losing decreases it. If you are one of the current 50 highest-ranked players in the Arena, your name will be displayed on the Top Players leaderboard.

Arena Battle

Grimguard Tactics is a rather enchanting RPG that offers easy-to-master yet entertaining combat and diverse heroes to recruit. You’ll enjoy upgrading and ascending your heroes between battles and battling enemies in the Dungeon. While this new RPG doesn’t introduce any innovative new mechanics, it does offer a hearty role-playing experience.
