The Call of Duty movie will explore “the cost of war” and probably won’t be as graphically violent as director Peter Berg’s upcoming Netflix film, The Mosquito Bowl.
In an interview with ComicBook, Berg, who is directing from a script by Taylor Sheridan, said the Modern Warfare games the film draws on are about more than shooting.
Berg said that underneath the hardw are and killing, the games are “really looking at the cost of war, the cost of having to be a warrior who’s, for whatever reason, chosen to put himself between real danger and the rest of us, and the burden that these guys carry”.
He described the characters – Captain Price, Soap, Ghost, and Alex – as “complicated humans”, not “cartoon characters or comic books”, and said there’s “a real soul” beneath the violence.
“This is not just ‘Hey, let’s shoot them all up and shoot popcorn!’ Like, there’s a soul underneath it, that I understand that Taylor Sheridan understands, and I think probably not quite as graphically violent as Mosquito Bowl, but there will be a very strong soul, and consequence of war within the film, called ‘duty,'” he said.
Berg’s Mosquito Bowl, a Second World War drama inspired by a real 1944 football match between Marines in the Pacific, arrives on Netflix on 25th November. The Call of Duty movie is due in cinemas on 30th June 2028.
A former long-time Call of Duty developer recently called out Activision executives profiteering from the re-release of games like Black Ops 1 and 2, whereas the developers who contributed “blood, sweat, and tears” to make them gained nothing.
