Subnautica 2 developer Unknown Worlds has outlined what to expect in the early to mid-term of its early access release.

While Unknown Worlds is unwilling to provide solid dates at this point, the team does reveal that first up will be planned improvements to Biomods system, blight encounters, wrecks gameplay, vehicle docking and fabrication, PDA databank, and voicelogs priority system. You can also expect more passive Biomod slots, changes to the storage cache, and sprinting.

The second update will focus on co-op, including HUD signals, base builder tool, and a pinned recipes system, as well as additions to voice chat, emote, player trading, player revive, and unspecified “additional customisations”.

While all this is going on, you can also look out for “ongoing improvements” to bug fixes, balance tuning, optimisation, and other continuous adjustments, as well as – a little later on – “major expansion updates”, including a new region, new biomes, new creatures, resources, tools, a new vehicle, and the “next chapter of the story”.

“So, as we build towards the next big drop that expands on the world, biomes, creatures, resources, tools, vehicles, and brings you the next chapter of the story, we’ll be planning on adding several improvement updates in the meantime!” the studio wrote. “The entire dev team has been working hard to put together some great quality-of-life fixes for our first update. This should help adjust and address some areas that need a little tweaking to make your Subnautica 2 experience even better.

“And for those of you who have been choosing co-op to adventure together with your friends, we’ve got some requested improvements and additions coming in our second update.”

When you first crash-land in Subnautica 2, you might feel a little lost. Don’t worry though – we’re here to walk you through exactly what things you should do first in Subnautica 2 and, hopefully, help you avoid getting eaten…
