The infamous tomb-raiding archaeologist Lara Croft returns to mobile thanks to Feral Interactive’s new port of Lara Croft: Guardian of Light. Initially released in 2010 via Steam and the PlayStation Network, the game offers an action-packed, puzzle-fueled experience. As Croft, you’ll explore a haunting jungle in Mexico with her new comrade, Totec.
Team up with Totec in Lara Croft: Guardian of Light
Lara spends weeks searching the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico after learning of an Aztec legend in which the Guardian of Light, Totec, battled Xolotl, a demonic presence. Legend says Totec trapped Xolotl with his own power weapon, the Mirror of Smoke.
Our beloved Tomb Raider locates the dangerous artifact in an ancient temple, but unfortunately, Xolotl escapes his mirror prison. Now, with Totec’s help, Croft must return the mirror to its proper place by dawn to stop the demon.
Lara Croft: Guardian of Light Has Intuitive Touch Controls
Often, ports struggle to provide intuitive touch controls, which can really hinder one’s experience. Luckily, Feral Interactive didn’t fall into this common trap here. By default, you touch the left side of the screen to bring up the virtual joystick to move and tap the left side to jump.
Tap the gun icon to change your equipped weapon and move the aiming icon to aim and fire. There’s also a button for setting and detonating bombs as well as a grappling hook button. Each button is generously sized and spaced, so you won’t constantly be hitting the wrong one. While the touch controls are easy enough to pick up, you can also connect your favourite controller at any time if you prefer.
Use Your Environment to Your Advantage
Lara Croft: Guardian of Light quickly thrusts you into the action. You’ll annihilate enemies using a variety of weapons, remove obstacles by detonating bombs, flip switches by throwing spears, and cross chasms using your trusty grappling hook.
There are some areas that, at first glance, may seem inaccessible. However, this is the infamous Lara Croft we are talking about. Throw your spear at a wall to embed it, then jump on it to reach far-off platforms. Some puzzles can be solved by moving boulders to create new platforms or holding down pressure plates. You can also attach your grappling hook to any golden ring you come across. This allows Lara to cross gaps and climb walls.
Use Artifact to Your Advantage in Lara Croft: Guardian of Light
As you explore the jungle and the decrepit ancient temple, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to nab rewards. Each level features Reward challenges that provide you with power-ups, artifacts, or relics upon completion. Equip artifacts in the inventory menu to take advantage of the bonuses they provide. However, most artifacts also feature a debuff.

For instance, equipping the Stone Arrow gives you Weapons +1 but also Bomb -1. Relics, on the other hand, are purely beneficial. The Scepter of Huitzilopochtli gives you a health regen ability, while equipping the Knife of Itzli lets you use the Power Shot ability. I recommend trying out new relics and artifacts as you collect them to see which you find most advantageous.
Lara Croft: Guardian of Light Features Epic Boss Battles
You’ll also test your mettle in challenging boss battles that require you to use your wits. For instance, you can’t damage the dinosaur boss at level four with your weapons. Rather, you’ll need to use your environment to really stick it to the feral beast. Guardian of Light features both single-player and co-op modes. In solo mode, you play as Lara, while in co-op mode, one player is Lara, and the other is Totec.
Lara Croft: Guardian of Light is a welcome addition to mobile. Featuring fast-paced combat, a slew of weapons to collect and tricky puzzles to solve, Guardian of Light is an epic adventure that’s sure to please any Tomb Raider fan. With a beautiful aesthetic, intuitive controls and difficult challenges to master, Lara Croft: Guardian of Light offers an immensely satisfying experience that you’ll want to dive right into.
