“Whoa what a wild reaction” – Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi reacts to backlash after praising an AI-generated FF6 remake trailer

Earlier this week, Final Fantasy legend Hironobu Sakaguchi praised an AI-generated trailer for a hypothetical remake of FF6, sparking some backlash, before being told to “please stop” by SaGa creator Akitoshi Kawazu, another Square veteran. The comments by Sakaguchi sparked a degree of backlash, and his answer has been… to double down on his interest.

Sakaguchi has since responded to the feedback claiming some level of surprise about the ferocity of it, while also sharing further AI-generated concepts linked to another role-playing game he wrote: Lost Odyssey

“Whoa!?” Sakaguchi responded on X, in a translation provided by X. “What a wild reaction lol.” He explained his position by saying he just “intuitively” sensed the potential of the FF6 remake. “It’s not gonna work as-is,” he added, “but it feels like there might be some intriguing stuff waiting down the line. That’s the vibe.

“In the end, maybe it’s just that I’ve barrelled through 40 years of work and private life powered purely by ‘exciting things’,” he added. “That’s the kinda guy I am, after all, lol.”

Sakaguchi officially left Square Enix in 2003, creating independent studio Mistwalker in 2004 with funding help from Microsoft. There, he helped create RPGs like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. Most recently, Mistwalker released Fantasian.

While we’ve known for a while some people at Square Enix are interested in remaking Final Fantasy 6, nothing seems to be officially moving. Regardless, it’s disheartening to see the father of the legendary RPG series seemingly support the kind of technology that the Final Fantasy protagonists he created would probably stand against.
