LOK Digital review – “Strange creatures, strange words”

  • Word puzzles made of words that aren’t real
  • Little creatures taking over the tiles
  • Think outside of the box.

LOK Digital is a sort of word game, except that none of those words are real. That might sound a little out of the box, but it’s more of a thinking game where you cannot rely on your ability to spot words you know and instead need to see the letters as symbols of a puzzle.

The introduction of this puzzler tells you about these black, blob creatures. They are looking to turn tiles black, taking them over. You will want to turn all tiles black, letters or no letters, on each level. Each starts off sort of slow, giving you just one word to look for; LOK. You will connect them together by selecting the letters in a row, but they must be next to each other, not diagonal. When you complete the word, those tiles turn black and you can turn another anywhere on the board black as well. Tiles that are black do not count as part of the grid, so you can then connect tiles as long as they have black tiles in between.

This might seem complex, and it does feel that way for the first few levels, but LOK Digital does a fantastic job of easing you into puzzles so that you can start to feel the flow of everything. After a while, you will get new words to play around with that have their own abilities. TA, for example, gives you one blob creature that can be placed on the map, but any of the other tiles with the same letter (or that are blank, if you select a blank one) will fill in. TLAK gives you two blobs, but they need to be placed next to each other.

Remembering these words, as they aren’t real, can be a bit of a challenge, so you can open up a little book of them on the level you are taking on, giving you a guide to what they do and which ones to use. There is also a hint system in the game if you get really stuck!

LOK Digital consists of different worlds, that have a set number of required puzzles and then a handful of extra challenging puzzles you can try out for fun. This provides plenty of gameplay to master. You can also take on daily puzzle challenges, which are timed, that give you something new to play around with.
