It looks like an animated Indian film from last year has actually copied its action from Sony Santa Monica’s 2018 God of War reboot.
The film in question is Mahavatar Narasimha, which is said to be the first installment in a planned seven-part animated Mahavatar Cinematic Universe. Now, I will put my hands up and say I personally hadn’t heard of Mahavatar Narasimha until this morning, when a post popped up on my social media feed.
The post in question comes from a well known PlayStation fan account, Black Thunder (you may recognise their name, as Sony Santa Monica added an Easter egg tribute to them in God of War Ragnarök
Anyway, Black Thunder shared a side-by-side clip of Kratos’ first encounter with Baldur in God of War next to action sequences from Mahavatar Narashimha. And, the latter looks like a direct copy in terms of the on screen action.
The comparison only lasts for around 20 seconds, but shows a character from the animated film being launched through the air in much the same way Baldur sends Kratos flying. We also see a character from Mahavatar Narasimha pulling up an entire tree to use as a weapon, again like Baldur does in God of War.
You can check out the comparisons below (heads up, this is an embed from X. Sorry, I haven’t seen it shared elsewhere). Eurogamer has asked Sony for comment on the clip and will update if we hear anything more.
As for God of War, it’s getting a TV series on Amazon. Amazon initially announced its God of War adaptation back in December 2022. More recently, showrunner Ronald D. Moore said the adaptation will remain largely faithful to Sony Santa Monica’s 2018 game, though it won’t be a frame-by-frame remake.
The series will reportedly begin filming in March of next year.
