The “future” of Tomb Raider will be revealed later this week, during The Game Awards.
As first confirmed in a Fortnite island dedicated to The Game Awards, a Tomb Raider announcement of some description will take place during the event.
“Did you miss her? She missed you,” Tomb Raider’s various social media accounts teased last night. The Game Awards account
So, what won’t we want to miss? Well, Amazon’s game department is currently assisting on the next mainline Tomb Raider entry with developer Crystal Dynamics. As with previous Tomb Raider games, this release will have “mind-bending puzzles to solve”, with the promise of a “wide variety of enemies to face and overcome”. The two companies said the next series entry will become the “the biggest, most expansive Tomb Raider game to date”.
Back in 2022, a leaked audition script reportedly for a role in the game had Lara Croft leading a team of younger tomb raiders as she deals with the isolation of success. Little official information has been revealed about the game since its announcement, however.
In August of last year, it was said the upcoming Tomb Raider game was “a huge, huge task”, but things were “going well”. Then, just last month, Crystal Dynamics laid off a number of staff, calling it part of a restructuring “for our next generation”. At this time, the studio cited the next Tomb Raider release as a factor in its decision.
As well as this game, Amazon also has the Sophie Turner fronted live-action Tomb Raider adaptation from Phoebe Waller-Bridge in the works.
Meanwhile, rumours have been floating around that a remake of 1996’s Tomb Raider is also on the cards.
Whatever it is, though, there are only a few days left to wait before we find out. The Game Awards 2025 will take place on Thursday, 11th December, at 7:30pm EST. That’s very early in the morning on the 12th, if you are in the UK. Leading the nominations at this year’s event is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which is up for 12 awards.
