The on-again, off-again Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake – which was first announced in late 2021 before changing studios – may be re-revealed as soon as this year.
At least that’s what reliable Star Wars insider 100% Star Wars has said (hat tip to Bespin Bulletin), in a recent video addressing last week’s news that the KOTOR remake has a potential 2028 release window. According to 100% Star Wars, sources inside Saber said, “The KOTOR remake’s best-case scenario was a mid-to-late 2027 release for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars.” But by slipping into 2028, the remake will align with the original game‘s 25th birthday.
“A reveal later this year has been planned,” 100% Star Wars then revealed, reinforcing previous claims that development under Saber has been progressing well. “Development on the game has not only been ramping up, but it’s been going extremely smoothly over the past three years since Saber started from scratch. They’ve been hiring some extremely high-end talent from across the industry and Saber is very much a unified front when it comes to the development of this game, with resources and talent being pulled from all over the company.” This all tallies with scraps of information we’ve heard about the KOTOR remake at Saber despite relative radio silence
The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game was released in 2003 by BioWare, and quickly established itself as one of the finest Star Wars games in an age and a stand-out RPG in its own right. BioWare wouldn’t go on to make a sequel, despite having some novel ideas for KOTOR 2, but instead those honours would go to Obsidian Entertainment. And although scruffier, KOTOR 2 has established a strong fan-favourite legacy of its own.
Hunger for a new Knights of the Old Republic game has remained strong ever since BioWare decided to hurl all of its creative effort into making a massively-multiplayer adaptation – Star Wars: The Old Republic – of the series rather than another single-player game. But former BioWare creators are starting to return to the promise of a Star Wars RPG, notably original KOTOR director Casey Hudson, who’s working on Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic – a spiritual successor of sorts. At this point, we have to wonder which game will arrive first. The Force, however, might be strong with both of them.
