Acclaimed co-op series Trine is returning for a fresh adventure with new and familiar faces, and a heist that goes wrong

If your life’s been lacking a bit of colour lately, have no fear: developer Frozenbyte’s acclaimed co-op platforming series Trine is back for a sixth outing, and once again it’s the aesthetic equivalent of a Dulux catalogue. It’s not too far off release either. Trine 6: Together in Time, in all its kaleidoscopic glory, comes to PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC on 17th September.

This time around, the adventure follows two enterprising young siblings, Moira and Adrius, whose fates are inadvertently bound with the realm’s greatest heroes when a heist goes wrong (we’ve all been there). And if you guessed those ‘heroes’ might be series stalwarts Amadeus the Wizard, Zoya the Thief, and Pontius the Knight, you’d be right – meaning there’s a choice of five possible characters as one to four players embark on a race to stop a dangerous warlock from unleashing magical havoc on the land.

Whizzing through the key features, Trine 6’s familiar side-scrolling platform and puzzle action introduces a new Time-Slow ability, intended to give players some breathing room when it comes to precision jumps and dodging attacks in combat. That might prove handy as Frozenbyte is promising enemies with distinct abilities – including the power to shield or strengthen allies – and boss encounters melding combat, traversal, and environmental challenges.

Additionally, each of Trine 6’s playable characters comes equipped with their own useful skills. Amadeus, for instance, can summon objects and manipulate the world with magic, while Zoya is armed with arrows and can use a rope to get around. As for Pontius, he’s got a big old hammer and wields his shield for both defense and propulsive purposes, which just leaves our two new faces. Moira (officially “the Acrobat”) can chain together kick combos and swing through the world with her ribbon, and Adrius the Squire gets a spear for poking stuff and for creating platforms.

Frozenbyte notes, however, that Trine 6’s puzzles have been designed with a “co-op-first approach”, meaning solutions don’t require the use of a specific hero’s unique abilities; rather “all puzzles can be solved by any character”. Solo players, meanwhile, can expect puzzles specifically re-designed to accommodate their lone adventuring. What else? Well, co-op is available both locally and online, and there’s crossplay support if you happen to have acquaintances yonder other platforms.

So that’s Trine 6: Together in Time then, and it launches 17th September for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 1 & 2, and PC via Steam and Epic.
