Sony announces price increase for new PlayStation Plus subscribers “due to ongoing market conditions”

Sony has announced that PlayStation Plus prices are rising for new customers in “select” regions, but that if you’re an existing subscriber, the price change does not apply – not unless the subscription lapses or changes. Or unless you are in Turkey or India.

“Starting May 20, PlayStation Plus prices for new customers will increase in select regions,” PlayStation announced in a post on X. “Due to ongoing market conditions, prices will start at $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP f or 1-month subscriptions and $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP for 3-month subscriptions.

“This price change does not apply to current subscribers (except in Turkey and India) unless the existing subscription changes or lapses.”

Presumably, mention of “prices will start at” means we’re talking about the bottom, PlayStation Plus Essential tier, though I will try to clarify this. This subscription currently costs £6.99 a month in the UK, so the price rises each month by one pound. The three-month price currently is £19.99, so this rises by two pounds.

There’s no mention of whether this will affect the more expensive Extra and Premium tiers.

PlayStation Plus Essential is the baseline offering designed to enable multiplayer play while giving you a small selection of free games. The more expensive Extra and Premium tiers offer far more in this regard, including in May’s PlayStation Plus line-up, games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Star Wars Outlaws.
